Web vs. Desktop — Which Version Should You Use?
Compare the browser-based and desktop versions of Motion Studio to decide which best fits your workflow and project size.
Motion Studio is available as both a web app and a downloadable desktop application. Both produce identical output, but they have different strengths depending on your workflow, project size, and preferences.
The Web Version
The web version runs entirely in your browser. No installation, no account creation — just visit the app and start working. It's the fastest way to go from zero to animating. Your images are processed locally; they are not uploaded to a server.
The Desktop Version
The desktop version installs natively on Windows, macOS, or Linux. It has direct file-system access, background rendering support, and bypasses browser memory limits. This makes it better suited for larger projects and regular use.
When to Choose the Web Version
Quick, one-off projects where you want to start immediately without installing anything. Working on a shared or borrowed computer where you can't install software. Small to medium sequences (under ~500 frames). Testing the app before committing to a download.
When to Choose the Desktop Version
Large sequences with hundreds or thousands of high-resolution frames. Regular, ongoing use as part of a repeating workflow. Background rendering — export while you continue other work. Native file dialogs and drag-and-drop from the operating system's file manager.
Feature Comparison
Both versions support all six export formats, date overlays, frame reordering, per-frame timing, live preview, and resolution control. The desktop version adds native file-system watching, background export, and higher memory headroom for very large image sequences.
Switching Between Versions
Your images are your project. There's no proprietary project file to worry about. Export from one version, and you can open the same images in the other version at any time. Your workflow is portable.
